The Course of Learning

Learning – not only emphasizes on physical activity of Bharatanatyam, but also integrates aspects of developing cultural awareness, appreciation for Indian Art & Tradition. The classes focus on Dance, Yoga, Music, Dance Language, and Theory relevant to Bharatanatyam.

Beginners Course

In this course, students are taught basic of Dance Stance, Steps, Rhythm, Dance Phrases, Gestures, and Expressions. Students will typically learn around 70 Adavus (steps) during this course.

Theory : Introduction to Bedhas (movements) of Head, Neck, Eyes, Eyebrows and Hastas.

Intermediate Course

In this course, students are taught Alaripu, Jatiswaram, Kauthvam, Shabdam and Abhinaya. Students will learn the techniques of forming different Adavus in the mentioned items.

Theory : Detailed study on Hastas and Abhinaya.

Advanced Course

In this course, students are taught Thillana, Kruthi, Varnam, Padam, Javali and Folk dances. By now, students will acquire well-rounded knowledge on all aspects of Bharatanatyam. They would also have the ability to compose/choreograph Bharatanatyam dance forms.

Theory : Detailed study on Pada Bedas, study of music compositions from various scholars such as Purandara Dasa, Thyagaraja etc.

Rangapravesha (Arrangetrum)

Rangapravesha or Arrangetrum – is graduation ceremony for the students. In this ceremony, students will debut solo performance on-stage. Typically, after student’s extensive training and learning, Guru will evaluate the students and will establish the readiness to do Rangapravesha or Arrangetrum.

Online Classes

Natyadwani also offers Online Bharatanatyam Classes for the students that cannot attend classes in-person (usually for the students based outside of Los Angeles). Currently, natyadwani has students from Memphis, St. Louis, Colorado Springs and other cities.
